Public Drawing Workshop
Seminar Week “Public Drawing in Prague”
Public spaces have not only been essential to urban life but have also been a main focus of architecture. Cities, institutions and private pa-
trons prided themselves by producing great public spaces. These squares, parks and plazas are still an essential part of the public life of many cities.
The Seminar Week aimed at introducing architecture students to “Architectural Ethnography.” The collective production of “public drawings” provided international student groups with the foundations of the related research methodology, drawing techniques, and conceptual frameworks. The research topic was the public spaces of Prague. By drawing, we try to understand how these places work, what makes them attractive and
what activities do they enable.
Students form ETH and the Fakulta Architektury ČVUT V Praze worked together in international teams to produce large scale drawings of
public spaces in the city of Prague. By drawing, listening to lectures, site visits, and the exchange of ideas within the international student groups, the students learned how to observe public life, how to draw the life, history and architecture of public spaces, and how to discuss with each other and
argue by drawing.
