House and Housing is the base of our living environment and a diverse field in architecture. House Behaviorology in Switzerland is an ongoing research that the Chair of Architectural Behaviorology of prof. Momoyo Kaijima, has been conducting with the students from ETH Zurich for the last 3 years.

Each year the focus has been on a different city or geographical area to learn about its living culture. The challenge is to find sustainable living conditions in the city, by understanding historical examples and their geography, density, economic standing, and time period.

The exhibited works in the Limonaia of Villa Saroli are the 2nd year students results of the Houses Behaviorology in Ticino semester.

To find the character and essence of today’s house design in Ticino students analyzed 35 exemplars of the canton’s most relevant existing single-family house. This Case Study spans from rural projects to more famous examples such as projects from Antonio Croci, Rino Tami, Peppo Brivio, Tita Carloni, Mario Campi, Mario Botta, Luigi Snozzi among others.

Second, the students sought to re-think the analyzed house by transforming single-family houses into multi-generational housing complexes for 20 people, responding to the need of greater density, but preserving the qualities of the original project. The plot for the design proposal is located near the center of Lugano, in Viganello on the slopes of Monte Bre. Being an unbuilt plot, it lends itself well as a pilot proposal directed to open up the discussion on densification near the city center of Lugano.

The studio has been done in collaboration with the chair of history and theory of architecture, prof. Laurent Stalder, assistant Laurin Schwarz, the chair of structural design, dr. Federico Bertagna, and the great support of Ludovica Molo, director of i2a,  and Nicola Navone, deputy director of Archivo del Moderno, teacher at Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio.
