Furniture – Vis à Vis

  • Hönggerberg, Zürich
  • Vis à Vis is an architectural installation suspended between two trees in a forest landscape, spanning a small pond. Built from wood and rope, the structure distributes forces deliberately: wood elements handle compression, while rope resolves tension. A recycled sail is attached to this framework.
  • Depending on where it hangs, it creates either a space for gathering or a moment of retreat. On one side, where the trees offer no natural cover, the sail forms a light canopy over a field of stones. These are arranged in an unstructured, organic way, inviting visitors to sit as if along a riverbank.
  • As the water level in the pond rises or falls, the structure itself remains stable, but the roof can be manually repositioned by adjusting the rope tensions and anchoring points. Vis à Vis frames two modes of inhabiting landscape—one social and horizontal, the other introspective and vertical.
