- Inside a 17th-century farmhouse in Basel, architecture was a stage for gendered separation, while still ensuring survival through cooperation. The hearth anchored women’s labor, including cooking, preserving food, and childcare, while men primarily entered to supply wood, grain, or meat.
- The barn was a male domain largely detached from the interior. Yet thresholds blurred.
- The hall linked barn and kitchen, melding labor and life. Thus, domestic architecture choreographed separation and dependence, a spatial bargain where division produced unity.
