Case Study – Zerkindenhof – 1271

  • Basel
  • Like oriental treasure troves, Basel's historic townhouses hide their stories behind wooden doors. Upon entering, the curious may find our city's history contained in that of the house itself.
  • After 700 years in the hands of various patrician families, the Zerkindenhof was finally inherited by the public. It is more than fitting that the building, one of whose noble owners had to flee Basel during the turmoil of the reformation, nowadays hosts the university's theological seminar.
  • Where knights once drank and ate and sang, students now brood dutifully over their books.
