Case Study – Haus Schmidt-Kohl

- In 1929, Artaria & Schmidt built a modest timber house on a hillside in Binningen, standing apart from the usual villas overlooking Basel. It offered minimalist living for a family and even included a small apartment.
- A light timber frame with non-load-bearing partitions enabled continuous reconfiguration, while the modular plan supported adaptation. Over time, sleeping alcoves and the apartment gave way to larger rooms.
- What began as functional minimalism grew into more generous living – a lasting example of adaptable architecture still relevant today.
