Case Study – Haus in St. Albanvorstadt
- Basel
- The narrow house in the walled suburban of St. Alban reflects the life of the artisan class. Locksmiths, stonemasons, shoemakers and day labourers lived and worked in cramped conditions.
- While the street was bustling with urban life, a small courtyard behind the front building was used for outdoor work. A rear building was added in the 18th century due to increased housing demand.
- The garden behind was used for cultivation. This spatial arrangement demonstrates how living, working and selfsuCiciency were organized within a confined space.
