Case Study – Maison particulière à Colony – Mario Botta, 1989

  • Cologny, Genève
  • This house, located on hillsides of Cologny has a dominant character of geometry, especially the huge opening on the front side of the house, which together with the balcony and roof give the house a monumental impressive front face. Basically it can be seen as an huge arch as a whole, divided into different segments.
  • Benefiting from the location of the house, the resident can fully enjoy the view of Geneva lake from the front side, which might be the main reason that the biggest opening is placed on this side. None of the windows are directly installed on the outside wall, which means that the space in-between is used as a buffer space.
  • Furthermore on the front side of the house the windows make the resident one step back from the outside opening and let the arch itself also become a part of the landscape.
