New Center on the Street

  • Interlaken, Bern, Switzerland
  • The construction of a covered area in the Jungfraustrasse for restaurant owners to expand into the street and attract tourists.
  • All restaurants share one big outside dining area on the street. Nevertheless, they still have their individual facade and atmosphere. The kitchens and services counters are moved closer to the street for better accessibility. This new arrangement creates an entrance situation where potential guests are interested to step into the restaurants.
  • The structure is a block construction made out of timber. The dining area is slightly elevated on a wooden deck to clearly mark the difference between the eating area and the walking area. Horizontal beams partly cover the structure in order to create shade. In the low season, tables are taken away and a Christmas market can take place.
