Case Study – Casa Maus – 1916

  • Lumbrein, Graubünden
  • Casa Maus in Lumbrein showcases a blend of tradition and modernity, with its plastered stone façade facing the village and its knitted wooden façade facing Val Lumnezia. This late 'Strickbau' adheres to local building traditions, yet the side façades break convention with a loggia extending into the stone wall area.
  • The materials inside interact in a similar fashion, creating a space that still retains the raw, almost unchanged character of its original construction. Even after its 2008 renovation by Michael Hemmi, the house preserves much of its historical essence.
  • The floor plan departs from tradition by eliminating the corridor between the kitchen and living room, and Hemmi’s modifications also dismantled the house’s original symmetrical layout, adding a more open, fluid quality to the space.
