Case Study – Casa Rizza – 2012

  • Vacallo, Ticino
  • Casa Rizza, dating back to the 17th century, was originally a residential tower in Vacallo, reflecting the status of Italy's elite. Its small footprint and vertical design symbolize power and hegemony.
  • The building's façade and roof were remodeled under heritage protection laws. The once-protruding plinth was likely removed, and the structure now serves as a status symbol, with the mayor as its current inhabitant.
  • The renovation transformed the dark, enclosed interior into a bright living space, with small windows set flush to thick stone walls, creating a modern home while preserving its historical significance.
