The Shifting House
- Viganello, Lugano
- The housing complex uses shifting walls to create diverse communal and private spaces that cater to residents of various ages and interests. This design promotes creativity and spontaneity, avoiding rigid hierarchies.
- Corridors act as dividing elements but guide residents toward a central common area, unified by a key kitchen. Despite the emphasis on openness, the complex also considers the need for privacy. Convexities and concavities are used to shape communal areas and create intimate nooks for personal retreats.
- The butterfly roof, oriented southward, enhances openness and connection to the surroundings while its concavity provides protection for the more private rooms. This design merges natural light with the need for seclusion, enriching the living experience.
